Calming Your Chilren’s Nerves About Isis

I, like many, are concerned about ISIS and the threat it posses for our country. Seeing children round up in cages, seeing beheadings and watching people burned alive is horrifying. The effect are even more terrifying for children. My son, for instance, has frequent nightmares over ISIS and their brutality. What can I say to help ease his mind so he’s not riddled with fear?

Fortunately, we can help ease our children’s minds on this heavy subject with a little forethought. Before we begin, we have to ensure that we’re in a good mental place to speak calmly about this issue. We cannot calm another if we’re all flustered, so we need to show a calm demeanor to our children .

Next, we have to ask questions and find out what they know and who their are their sources. Before seeking a solution, we need to understand their point of view. Sometimes, we may be able to discredit their sources, which can help them come to the realization that their fear isn’t justified. Plus, if possible, it is best to initiate this conversation. This will allow you to be in control and be proactive instead of reactive. By doing this, you’ll be able to lead your child where you want them to go, not the other way around.

After understanding their point of view, we can reassure them that our leaders are doing everything they can to keep them safe. Knowing this can really help calm older children. Often, safety is their primary concern and not knowing can lead them down troublesome paths. Therefore, explaining that our leaders and military are going to do everything it can to protect him/her may help ease tension.
