It’s hard to pinpoint when it happened, but it has happened to many of us. During our childhood, give us a toy or action figure and we could create a magical world and explain it down to the smallest detail. Somehow, as we get older, we lost our sense of awe. Our imagination was replaced with reason, practicality and responsibility. Every now and then, we need someone like Emmet to remind us that imagination is awesome.
Emmet, a regular guy that went along with business as usual, lacked imagination. Well, that’s not entirely true. He had ideas, but they were disappointing on many levels. When he stumbled upon the Piece of Resistance, he was dubbed “The Special”. Believing that he was more than he was, Emmet tried time and time again to rise to the occasion and tackle problems beyond his capabilities. For him, belief was enough to carry him a long way.
On the other side is President Business. Wanting everything to be in order, he fought against imagination and the creation of anything outside of the established norm.
Over time, as our responsibilities mount, we slowly shift from Emmet and become more like President Business. The time for games ends and we work hard to fit into society’s expectations. If ever we strive outside of what is “normal”, we are usually hit hard with criticism, doubt and even ridicule.
Those that reach an inch beyond expectations are MasterBuilders, the frontrunners of creation and imagination. Anyone willing to believe can be a MasterBuilder. Belief is the first step to achieving, as it is the primary ingredient to action.
Growing up and maturing is a good thing, something we should strive for everyday. However, the price for maturing cannot be our imagination or our creative spirit. After all, your imagination is awesome.
