The Slap Episode III “Anouk”: You Don’t Have To Live In Fear

Everyone’s path is not the same. Ones hurdles may be vastly different than yours. However, when your paths cross, that doesn’t make their opinion, fears, or concerns any less relevant than yours. Truthfully, on any one subject, we aren’t going to have all the answers. We can get scared and move with shaky hands. Even so, we need to know that it’s okay to have those feelings. It’s okay to feel things. It’s okay to be human, but it’s not okay to live in fear.

Anouk doesn’t want children. Given her troubling background, she doesn’t believe in relationships either. Not wanting to have children is okay. Children aren’t for everyone and this stance doesn’t have to be demonized.

Anouk believes that Rosie (mother of Hugo, the child that got slapped) should drop the case against Harry. Rosie puts little stock in Anouk’s point of view because Anouk doesn’t have children. Does not having children make Anouk’s view less valid? Does not having children make her void of common sense, or the ability to see the big picture?

Excitement a common emotion associated with pregnancy announcements. Common, but not always. Anouk found herself in the terrified camp after an unexpected pregnancy. Not ready for this, she handles it poorly, alienating her boyfriend and snapping at friends. This episode showed that it’s okay to be scared, but we have friends and family that will be with us every step of the way.

Lastly, if our fears were based on incomplete or false information, how do we go about addressing our previous mistakes? Anouk, decided to go to each person she hurt and apologize. She faced her fears head on and got that catharses that many of us long for.

“So long as you fear loss, you will never really be living your life.”

What fears have you overcome that kept you from living the life you wanted? How has overcoming fear helped you become a better person?
