The Slap: Episode IV “Manolis” It’s Hard Letting Go

maxresdefault (1)

Manolis is a fading patriarch. He raised his son Hector and his nephew Harry, but they are grown with families of their own. Now, he finds that Harry and Hector don’t need him like they used to, so he’s found himself with a loss of purpose in his children’s life. After Harry slapped Hugo, Manolis found an opportunity to jump back into his children’s life and fix a problem.

Being the family patriarch, Manolis seeks to fix problems and dispense wisdom. Therefore, he seeks out the advice of an old lawyer “friend” to help Harry with his case. As expected, things take a turn from bad to worse as the lawyer starts a character assassination campaign on Gary, Rosie and Hugo. Quickly, things spiral out of Manolis’ control.

After a health scare, Manolis visit Aisha (Hector’s wife) to get his blood pressure checked. Manolis uses the opportunity to ask Aisha to get Rosie (Hugo’s mother) to drop the suit against Harry. Emotionally, Aisha refuses because she wants Harry to pay for his mistakes.

After a long, troubling day, Manolis returns to his home, where his wife (Koula) questions why he never asked her opinion. Manolis begins having doubts about his parenting skills. He wonders if he made crucial mistakes that led Harry and Hector down their respective paths.

Koula speaks truth into the matter. They did the best they could, never intended any harm, so now they have to let go and let things take their natural course.

Manolis realized his hands cannot guide the outcome. His days as the all-knowing patriarch are over. What will be will be, neither because of him, or in spite of his best efforts.

As a parent, how do you decide when is the best time to let go of your children?
